When it comes to travel, some of the best advice doesn’t come from guidebooks but from real people who’ve been there before you. Our customers and Facebook community recently shared their favourite travel tips, from clever packing tricks to the little details that help make a holiday run more smoothly. We’ve gathered them here to inspire you, enhance your experience, and help you avoid unnecessary stress.
Best way to pack your suitcase
Several of you agreed on the golden rule: don’t overpack. It’s easy to throw in outfits “just in case”, but most people admit they only wear a fraction of what they bring. A suitcase that’s too full quickly becomes a hassle: heavy to carry, awkward to manage, and frustrating when you’re trying to squeeze everything back in for the journey home.
"My tip is not to pack too many clothes as I have never worn everything I bring. Also packing clothes which can be worn as layers if the weather turns cold." - Elizabeth
"Pack your stuff day wise so you can easily find your clothes and take great pictures." - Sarah
Eithna swears by packing cubes - "They help save space protect from wrinkles and easier to locate specific items without disturbing the rest of your luggage."
Together, these simple strategies show that packing smartly can save time, reduce stress, and make your holiday far more enjoyable. We loved how Ann simply puts it! "Travel light and travel often." The more you travel, the more incredible places you’ll discover and the more memorable experiences you’ll enjoy.
Essentials items for hand luggage
Having your essential items in your hand luggage, such as travel documents, valuables, and medication, helps ensure a smooth start to your holiday. Katie recommended keeping swimwear and a change of clothes in your hand luggage, perfect for heading straight to the pool if your room isn’t ready, or in case of delays. Elizabeth also suggested taking “a mini supply of cosmetics and one change of clothes in my hand luggage. I wear shoes a size larger and loose clothes for comfort.” A few small additions like these can make a big difference to how smoothly your holiday begins.
Allow plenty of travel time to the airport
Travel days can feel busy, so allowing extra time takes the stress out of the experience. It’s always recommended to be at the airport a few hours before your flight, giving you plenty of time for check-in, security, and a relaxed start to your holiday.
"Be at the airport three hours before flights. Do not leave it until the last minute to get the coach from wherever you are travelling from in case of accidents on the road." – Marie
Arriving early means you can begin your journey feeling calm rather than rushed.
Best gadgets for travelling
Sometimes it’s the little tools that make the biggest difference. Jackie highlighted a practical must-have: "Always bring a power pack as back-up for your electronics." Catherine also suggested packing a couple of carabiners.
"They come in all sizes so can be used in a lot of ways. I use the small ones to secure the zippers on my bag when I'm in a crowded area or attach my wallet inside my bag, the medium ones to hang a water bottle, bag or jacket from my carry on, and the larger ones to hang clothes to dry after I have washed them in a hotel bathroom, etc. Very cheap at a hardware store."
A top tip from us: We would also recommend a universal travel adaptor, which keeps your devices charged wherever you are in the world, and noise-cancelling headphones, ideal for blocking out background noise on flights or coaches so you can relax with music, podcasts, or simply enjoy some peace and quiet.
Take along some home comforts
For many in our community, bringing a small reminder of home can make travelling more comfortable. One traveller told us they always tuck a few Barry’s Tea bags into their case, along with a small teddy bear. A familiar brew and a comforting keepsake might seem simple, but they can make hotel rooms feel cosier and long journeys a little easier. Others like to pack their own pillow to ensure a good night’s sleep, proving that these personal touches can make all the difference.
Be prepared for the unexpected
Whilst it’s an unusual occurrence for luggage to go missing, a little preparation can save a lot of stress if the unexpected does happen. Marie shared a smart safeguard:
"If travelling as a couple I always pack the cases half and half, both cases have stuff belonging to both of us so that if one case goes missing at least we have something to wear."
Elizabeth also suggested photographing your suitcase in case it gets lost, a simple step that can help avoid unnecessary hassle. It’s not just luggage to think about; if you lose your debit or credit card while away, having a back-up can be a real lifesaver. Jo advised always keeping some spare cash hidden away. It’s a simple precaution, but one that can make a big difference if you find yourself in a tricky situation. We also suggest keeping copies of important documents. Having a digital copy of your passport, insurance, and booking details stored safely, or emailed to yourself, can be a real help if originals go missing.
Don’t forget travel insurance
"Always have health insurance." - Maire
"Make sure to get travel insurance." - Sandra
"Apply for an EU Health Insurance Card and take out good insurance." - Marie
When it comes to peace of mind, travel insurance is one of the most important things you can arrange before your holiday. Unexpected events like medical emergencies, lost luggage, or travel delays can happen to anyone, and the right cover ensures you’re not left out of pocket or stranded without support.
Research your holiday destination
Whilst we plan the itinerary and organise the guided excursions, doing a bit of research into your holiday destination can make a real difference.
"Find out when your free time is going to be at each destination and research ahead for things you might like to see when out on your own!" - Debi
"When on a tour and given own time, drop a pin on your phone map, to find your way back!" - Colette
A top tip from us: Ask your local guide what to do during your free time. They know the area better than anyone and can point you towards hidden gems you might otherwise miss. Free time is your chance to soak up the atmosphere, explore at your own pace, and enjoy the little things that make each place special.
Listen to your local guide
Being considerate of your fellow travellers and respecting your guide’s instructions makes the whole experience smoother for everyone.
"When your guide gives you a time to return to the bus,try your best to be on time. It's not fair on other travellers who are back in time." - Anne
"People need to listen to their guide & be on time both going on trips & the return trip Also staying with the guide & not wandering off mid tour, which can cause both delays & people stressing." - Mary
Our guides are there to make sure everything runs smoothly, so listening carefully not only helps you get the most from each stop but also keeps the whole group on schedule, ensuring everyone can experience incredible sights and places together.
