Top 5 Foods of Sorrento
Georgina Willcox | 06 July 2019
One of the best things about a holiday in Italy is that you’re guaranteed to eat well! Food is part of the Italian culture, from fine cheeses, cured meats, risottos and pastas, you'll be spoiled for choice! However, with so many amazing options, it can be hard to decide what to try first! So we're sharing our top 5 favourite dishes that can be found on our Sorrento holidays.
Buon Appetito!
1. Seafood
Renowned for its seafood, the jewel in Sorrento’s culinary crown is the wonderful shellfish. One of our favourite dishes is Spaghetti e Vongole (spaghetti with clams) and also Frittura di Calamari & gamberi (lightly floured calamari and fresh shrimps). Also try octopus casserole, shrimp sautéed or the spider crab soup. Wash them down with a crisp glass of Greco di Tufo wine to complement the incredibly fresh taste of the sea.
2. Pizza
The countrywide debate will rage on for many centuries, but we believe that the best pizza in Italy comes from Sorrento. Naples may have come up with the idea but Sorrento locals will insist they have improved on their neighbour’s recipe over the years. We like to keep it simple, and choose the tried and tested tomato, mozzarella, rocket and parmesan combination. Sample a glass of Rosso Sorrento as a great accompaniment.
3. Gnocchi alla Sorrentina
A great rustic staple, in Sorrento they like to smother gnocchi (potato pasta) with a fresh tomato sauce and cover them with delicious Treccia cheese and some fresh basil to finish it off. We recommend that you try this comfort food with a glass of Lacryma Christi (literally meaning ‘Tears of Christ’) and you will surely feel closer to Heaven!
4. Treccia cheese
For cheese lovers look no further than the local Treccia. This beautifully presented cheese is a regional variation of Mozzarella. The cheese is woven into a plait and is usually enjoyed with bread, salami, with pasta or by itself. Consider a glass of Pinot Grigio while you enjoy a moment of cheese indulgence.
5. Limoncello
Another Sorrento speciality, this time a drink. Limoncello is a digestive liqueur made by infusing lemon peel in alcohol. This is the only way to round off your meal in Sorrento, especially when you’re on holidays. The truly wonderful part about this Sorrento favourite is that some restaurants will offer a Limoncello free of charge when you ask for the bill.
