It took Michelangelo over 40 years to complete from 1505 to 1545. The basilica was founded in the 5th century to house the chains that bound St. Peter in Jerusalem and they remain in the basilica to this day. From here you will continue towards Venice Square (Piazza Venezia), which is where many of the main thoroughfares of the city intersect. It stands at the foot of Capitol Hill and next to Trajans Forum, which was the last of the Imperial fora to be constructed in Rome. Here you can find the monument to Vittorio Emanuele II who was the first king of Italy. Finally you will make your way around to the iconic Trevi Fountain.
