Top Five Game of Thrones Locations in Europe

Brace yourselves, the final season of Game of Thrones is upon us!

This remarkable series has used various stunning locations around the world as filming backdrops, many of which can easily be visited.

Here are the top five Game of Thrones locations in Europe to inspire you to travel.

Croatia

1. Dubrovnik

The vast majority of scenes in Dubrovnik are used for King’s Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms and where the iconic Iron Throne is located.

Dubrovnik boasts stunning architecture, spectacular views, beautiful weather and fantastic food. The city has a rich history dating back to the 7th century and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979.

Also used as a location for King’s Landing is Ston, just outside of Dubrovnik. We recommend you visit this city, as it has the longest wall in the world after the Great Wall of China and here you can sample the famous Ston Oysters.

2. Šibenik

Some of Arya Stark’s Braavos adventures were filmed in the old town of Šibenik. Less well known than the famous cities of Dubrovnik and Split, the pretty seaside town of Šibenik lies on Croatia’s north Dalmatian Coast. The surrounding region is home to beautifully preserved historic towns, sleepy offshore islands and some of Croatia’s most impressive national parks.

3. Split

Scenes in The Red Keep, Daenarys' Throne Room and Meereen were filmed in Split and its surrounding areas. Located by the Adriatic Sea and the second largest city of Croatia, Split has so much to offer. Discover the impressive Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site built for the Roman Emperor Diocletian around the 4th century AD, sample authentic Dalmatian cuisine or just relax on the abundance of beautiful beaches.

Spain

4. Seville

Andalucía’s most lively and colourful city, located on the banks of the River Guadalquivir. Seville is famous for flamenco, tapas and a rich cultural and architectural heritage. Its vibrant historic centre boasts remarkable sites, including the impressive Alcázar Palace and gardens, this was used as the location for the private residence of the rulers of Dorne.

Malta

5. Gozo

Gozo is picturesque, with green hills, tranquil villages and magnificent seascapes. Sadly the Azure Window is no longer there, which was the setting for Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen’s wedding, but it is still worth visiting this tiny remarkable country. Malta has a unique charm; its colourful history and influences from Mediterranean neighbours have resulted in a magical blend of culture, cuisine, language and landscape.
