View Dates & Prices

Discover the highlights of the Rhine, dotted along the river from Basel to Amsterdam.

Travelling on board the 4 Star MS Amadeus Silver III, you will experience the elegance of a boutique hotel as you are transported to some of Europe’s most picturesque towns and cities. Excursions which are included during your holiday are a half day guided city tour of Basel, as is a half day excursion to Heidelberg and a city tour of Amsterdam with a canal trip. Also included are walking tours of Koblenz and Cologne. These tours are led by expert local guides who will share their wealth of knowledge and take you to the highlights of each destination. A programme of further optional excursions will be offered on board at each port of call, subject to availability.

Much smaller than an ocean liner, the ship will take you into the heart of most cities you visit, giving you more time to visit the attractions and enjoy your time ashore.

Please note that this holiday may not be suitable for those with reduced mobility. For more details, please contact us.

Occasionally, river cruising can be affected by changes in the water level.  These changes may occur during the sailing, or shortly before departure, which means we may not be able to advise you in advance.  In the event of any change, the cruise operator will attempt to keep to the original itinerary in as far as it is possible.  In some instances, overnights on the ship may be replaced by hotel stays.  A river cruise will only be cancelled outright in the event of safety concerns, which are extremely rare.

Holiday highlights

Cologne
Germany’s fourth largest city spans the river Rhine and was founded almost 2000 years ago by the Romans. The city was utterly devastated during the Second World War and is now characterised by the contrast between modern post-war architecture and the carefully and painstakingly rebuilt Old Town.
Amsterdam

The Dutch capital is renowned for its rich artistic history and winding canals dotted with narrow house and pretty bridges, as well as being the most bicycle friendly city in the world, with over 400km of cycle paths and almost 900,000 bicycles. Explore the city and its numerous museums and galleries. Amsterdam is a relatively small and flat city, with very little road traffic, that can easily be navigated on foot, or by bicycle if you’re feeling adventurous!

Heidelberg
With its rich literary history and idyllic setting on the river Neckar, Heidelberg is one of Germany's most picturesque and romantic cities. The city’s main attraction is its magnificent sandstone castle which overlooks the red roofs of the baroque “Altstadt” or Old Tow, dating from the 18th century. Having survived World War II mostly unscathed, this small but cosmopolitan town is now one of the best preserved and most enchanting cities in the country.

MS Amadeus Silver III

The MS Amadeus Silver III an elegant and spacious ship, with a more comfortable and intimate atmosphere compared to an ocean liner. All passenger cabins are outward facing with windows offering views of the river as you cruise past some of the best scenery in Europe. You can also enjoy relax in the classical “Café Vienna”, or take in wonderful views from the sun deck, lounge or bar areas.

Trip Itinerary - Day by day

Day 1 - Depart Dublin for Basel

Icon
Morning

Depart Dublin for Basel

On arrival in Basel you will be met by our local guide and begin your holiday with a walking tour of the city. Embark on a journey back through all the epochs. There can be few other cityscapes where buildings dating back as far as the fifteenth century engage so harmoniously and vibrantly with the contemporary creations of internationally distinguished architects. On our tour, we'll tell you all about Basel and the background to its development, while passing historic buildings such as the City Hall, the Basel Cathedral and the Barfüsserkirche. We'll also explain a lot about the city's present situation. As well as taking you to some picturesque corners of the Old Town, we'll show you places that closely reflect Basel's present-day Zeitgeist, such as the Museum der Kulturen and the Tinguely fountain. You will have some free time for lunch before boarding your coach and transferring to the river cruise port in Basel to join your 7-night River Cruise.

Icon
Morning

Al Leisure

On this morning, Silver III will be docked in Speyer. Speyer is one of Germany’s oldest cities which is located along the banks of the Rhine, in the Rhineland-Palatinate state of southwest Germany. The 11th century Imperial Cathedral of Speyer is one of Germany's largest and most important. Its crypt contains the tombs of eight German emperors and kings as well as several bishops. Speyer was also a centre for Jewish scholarship in the medieval period.

Afternoon

Excursion to Heidelberg

Following lunch on the boat, sail to Mannheim and from there, you will be taken on an included excursion to Heidelberg. Heidelberg is a world famous university city on the Neckar River. The town is one of the few German cities with a widely preserved baroque Old Town. The tour through Heidelberg begins with a visit to the Castle. The formerly splendid residence made of red sandstone is now in ruins. However, it is arguably the most beautiful ruin in all of Germany. The castle tour leads into the castle garden. From the Grand Terrace you will have a wonderful view of the city and the Neckar River. The tour continues with a stroll through the enchanting old town, to the Karl-Theodor Bridge, the late-gothic Church of the Holy Spirit and the town hall. The ship will depart for Ruedesheim that night.

Day 4 – Ruedesheim and Koblenz

Icon
Morning

At Leisure

Wake up in the romantic town of Rüdesheim, surrounded by gentle sloping vineyards and famous for its local wine, brandy and specialty coffee (careful - the local coffee and brandy are married in the "Rüdesheimer Kaffee" concoction!). After you have had time to enjoy your visit on your own, your ship leaves the harbour mid-day, just in time to enjoy a fabulous lunch on board and savour the first-class culinary delights.

Icon
Afternoon

Guided Tour of Koblenz

Later in the day you will arrive in Koblenz where passengers will enjoy a guided walking tour of the city. Koblenz is one of the most beautiful and oldest towns in Germany, with over 2,000 years of history. On the guided walk through the romantic streets between the St. Castor Basilica and the Liebfrauenkirche (the Church of our Beloved Lady) you will discover the most important sights of Koblenz. This tour would not be complete without a visit to the Emperor Wilhelm Memorial at the famous German Corner and the town’s landmark, the Schängel Fountain at the Town Hall. At the end of the walk you will reach the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine rivers and the ropeway of Koblenz.

Day 5 – Cochem

Icon
Morning

River Cruise to Cochem

This morning, you will have some free time to enjoy the boat and take in the passing landscape as you sail down the Rhine, onto the town of Cochem where you will arrive in the early afternoon.

Icon
Afternoon

Optional Walking Tour & Wine Tasting

In the most romantic part of the Moselle Valley, where the river curves between two hiking paradises - Eifel and Hunsrück - lies the old town of Cochem. There will be an optional walking tour and wine tasting this afternoon (payable locally). The magnificent Reichsburg Castle, situated on a precipitous rock high above the town, dominates the landscape. The town of Cochem itself is a sight worth seeing; highlights include its narrow streets and twisty alleys, the lovingly restored half-timbered houses with the typical slate roofs, the historical market-place, medieval town gates, churches and walls.

Day 6 – Cologne

Icon
Morning

Cologne

The ship will arrive into Cologne in the early morning. Following breakfast you will enjoy a city walk of Cologne where you can explore the surroundings of the famous Cathedral and the Old Town. In the narrow, cobbled streets of the old town and in the busy squares, such as the Old Market or the Hay Market, you will get a feeling for life in this city, both past and present. You will visit Cologne Cathedral, either accompanied by your guide or on your own initiative (depending on the opening hours of the cathedral and/or if a mass is celebrated). Since its completion in 1880, Cologne Cathedral is the landmark of the town and also one the most visited sites in Germany.

Icon
Afternoon

River Cruise

The boat will depart Cologne around 14.30 on this day and on this evening you will enjoy the Captain’s Gala Dinner on board the vessel.

Day 7 – Amsterdam and the Dutch Countryside

Icon
Full Day

Amsterdam and the Dutch Countryside

This morning you will dock in Hoorn where you will join a coach and local guide for your city tour of Amsterdam. On this tour through the Dutch metropolis, you will see the Royal Palace, numerous canals and the Museum Quarter. As there is no better way to see the city than cruising on the water, the tour will end with a canal cruise boat trip. Afterwards, drive through the Dutch Polder landscape to the old fishing village of Volendam. The houses of Volendam are built very close together, forming a typical neighbourhood. Take a stroll through the old village and see people still dressed in traditional costumes. Board your coach and drive out of Volendam into the countryside to visit a local cheese farm. Here, you will learn how Dutch cheese is made and also sample the local product.
